Mother bighorn poached, lamb dies week later
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada game wardens are trying to find who's responsible for illegally killing a desert bighorn sheep near Henderson and leaving her nursing lamb for dead.
Authorities say they found the lactating sheep shot to death June 6 in the mountains above the Anthem neighborhood. About a week later, they found a lamb dead in the same area.
There were no injuries to the lamb, and game wardens say they believe it was the female sheep's baby.
Officials say lambs born in the spring are vulnerable while nursing and rely on their mothers to survive.
Members of the Operation Game Thief Citizens' Board called the shooting a senseless poaching that killed two animals. The group is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
