North Las Vegas jail may close its doors
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Committing a misdemeanor offense in North Las Vegas could soon earn you a trip out of town, but not a vacation. Inmates would instead sit in the Las Vegas City Jail if both cities agree to a proposed plan.
This comes after major budget woes for the City of North Las Vegas. It's trying to close a 33 million dollar deficit. City Manager Timothy Hacker says the cost saving move could save the city $12 million the first year and then about $16 million the years thereafter. If approved the plan would be effective for the next 5 years. Both the NLV and the LV city councils will vote on the resolution next Wednesday, June 20, 2012. North Las Vegas correction officers would still oversee their own inmates, just at a different and shared facility. Currently, about 150 people work at the jail. The proposed plan would keep 50-55 positions. "It's a tough number to accept, it's a tough number to hear; I wish that we could keep all of our employees working," says Steve Harney, V.P. of the Teamsters Local No. 14. 40 of 43 Teamster positions at the jail will likely be cut, according to Harney.
