Clark County School District issues 400 layoff notices
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County School District has announced that it will lay off 400 licensed personnel, as part of its reduction of more than 1,000 teaching positions for the 2012-2013 school year.
The 400 notices that were put in the mail today reflect an estimated number of positions remaining after taking into account retirements and anticipated relocations.
While the District continues negotiations that seek concessions to balance its budget, principals are being asked to plan for the current reality. Instructions went to each principal this morning informing them of the notices and identified which teachers in their buildings have been identified for layoffs.
Under the contract rules, teachers with 5-day suspensions and the lowest seniority will be the first let go.
The areas which will be exempt from layoffs are English, math, special education, science, selected world languages, and SIG Grant schools.
A protest by teachers against the layoffs began at 8:30 a.m. this morning outside the school district's main administration building.
