Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A woman says her ex-husband is dead and her son is behind bars after a shooting in the southeast part of Las Vegas on Wednesday.

The shooting happened just after 9 a.m. near Windmill and Eastern. The suspect, 19-year-old Tyten Kaehu-Scanlan, was arrested just blocks away shortly after fleeing the scene.

"There was just a lot of animosity that over the years built up inside my son," Rebecca, the suspect's mother, told Action News.

She didn't want to go on camera, but said the man killed was the father of seven of her children and the stepfather of the Tyten, the alleged gunman.

"There was a lot of verbal abuse, emotional, physical," Rebecca said. "Back in October, they tried to settle things like adults, but my ex-husband didn't feel the need to ask my son for forgiveness.

The victim was gunned down on Windmill as he was heading to Rebecca's home to pick up his children, she said.

Rebecca said her ex-husband was violent towards her as well, and fears for her son's future.

Police say the weapon used in the shooting was confiscated when Kaehu-Scanlan was arrested.

The victim has not been identified by the Clark County Coroner's office.
