North Las Vegas city council votes to declare state of emergency
North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Action News is following a developing story out of North Las Vegas where the city council has voted unanimously to declare a state of emergency.
City leaders are faced with finding a way to handle the city's $33 million budget shortfall.
The budget battle between city leaders and unions has lasted for weeks, with the sides unable to come to an agreement.
City council members said Friday's decision was not an attack on unions, but rather an attempt to save jobs.
The resolution to declare a fiscal emergency will cancel cost of living raises, uniform allowances and holiday sell-backs for the police and fire unions.
City leaders say they tried to make concessions with those emergency service unions but were unsuccessful.
The unions say the city never gave an honest portrayal of the true deficit. Union leaders still plan on fighting the decision.
