Text messages reveal illicit relationship between softball coach and teen
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Silverado High School's 43-year-old varsity softball coach was arrested Thursday morning.
Albert Hernandez is accused of having sex with a student and faces child pornography charges because of the way police say they exchanged some graphic text messages.
Police say the text messages included very explicit photos of both Hernandez and the 17-year-old girl. Some of the photos showed them together, performing sexual acts.
Many of the details in the arrest report are too graphic to share, but it was those text messages that led police to their suspect.
Alberto Hernandez is described as a popular coach by students at Silverado.
Neighbors are also in shock. They describe Hernandez as a dedicated father.
"He has kids that are teenagers," one neighbor said. "They would see it and know better. It would never happen. It's kind of hard for me to believe that. He's a good guy."
According to investigators, Hernandez had an inappropriate relationship with the Silverado High senior for months. It started at the end of January when the girl transferred to the high school.
She served as the team manager of the varsity softball team, which Hernandez coached.
His arrest report says the two had sex in the coach's home and car.
It was the victim's father who eventually had suspicions and alerted police in May.
"What brought to light to the father was a high number of calls and text messages between the victim and Coach Hernandez," a police spokesperson said.
Detectives determined those calls and messages were X-rated, detailing an illicit affair. According to the report, Hernandez did not deny it. The same report says the victim told police "the sex acts were all consensual, and that she knew it was wrong."
Hernandez has been fired as a coach at Silverado. Police confirm he is also a coach for a local youth league but did not specify which one. They're urging anyone with more information to come forward.
