Friends remember woman killed by car while helping dog
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The woman who was struck and killed by a passing car on Boulder Highway Wednesday night has been identified as 57-year-old Valerie Marie Roberts.
Police say Roberts stopped to help someone rescue an injured dog, and parked her P.T. Cruiser in the left northbound land in front of the Eastside Cannery Hotel and Casino.
The Cruiser's hazard lights were on. Roberts was standing on the passenger side in the center land when a man driving a Dodge Charger swerved to avoid her vehicle, and hit her.
Those who knew and loved Roberts are grief-stricken, but say they are not surprised by her actions.
Family friend Rodney Miller said, "She loved everybody, you know. She owned a cat also, so I can't be surprised that she would put her life in front of any human being or living thing or that. She was just doing what was right."
This is the 58th fatal traffic accident in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
Police consider Roberts a pedestrian because she was standing in the road.
The driver of the car that hit her was not injured, and has not been charged.
Police say drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
