Clark County School District to cut 1,000+ positions
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- More than one thousand teachers will lose their jobs, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County School District.
The school district announced that it would be necessary to lay off teachers and other staff in order to present a balanced budget after the school district lost its fight against the teacher's union earlier this month.
According to a school spokesperson, 1,015 teachers will lose their jobs.
The school district had asked that teachers to accept a pay freeze to help balance the budget. The teacher's union insisted that the school district had enough money to pay for the raises.
An arbitrator sided with the union and the school district was ordered to pay raises for both the current year and the 2012-2013 school year.
The final budget is being presented at 5 p.m. today to the school board of trustees.
