Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) --  A judge will decide Friday morning whether a dog that killed a child will be euthanized or sent to an animal sanctuary.

It's become an extremely emotional issue in the valley. Supporters have even set up a Facebook page to save Onion, the Mastiff-Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.

Many feel the attack on a 1-year-old boy at his birthday party in his Henderson home was an accident.

Onion is a 6-year old, beloved pet. His owners say he never showed any signs of aggression until he was tugged by the toddler.

Stacia Newman is with Nevada Political Action for Animals. The group got a restraining order to keep Onion from being euthanized on Tuesday, ten days after the fatal attack.

"Just think about, that if the dog did something," Newman says. "The dog's not aware of it. It's an animal. He doesn't understand what he's being punished for. And all the people are asking for is to just let the dog... the dog just survive, because he really doesn't know what he did, really."

If the judge spares Onion's life he could be sent to a sanctuary in Colorado that takes in aggressive, large breed dogs. If not, Onion will be euthanized. He has been legally deemed vicious.

Animal rights activists will hold a rally at the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas at 9 a.m., hoping to influence the judge who will decide Onion's fate at 10.
