Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County coroner's office has released the cause of death for the Little League baseball player Spencer Melvin who collapsed and died on his way to a baseball game.
The death was determined as natural and was caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and acute chronic bronchitis.
HCM is defined as a condition in which the heart muscle becomes thick. The thickening makes it harder for blood to leave the heart, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood.
The condition is usually passed down through families and it is believed to be the result of several problems with the genes that control heart muscle growth.
The 8-year-old boy was walking to a baseball field with his father and brother April 10 when he collapsed.
His family was unaware of any heart condition.
