Drivers and pedestrians caught breaking the law at busy intersections
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Local law enforcement will be out in force this week to target some of Clark County's busiest, and most dangerous intersections.
On Tuesday, officers focused on the intersection of Desert Inn and Maryland Parkway, and ticketed more than 200 drivers.
They say the most common offenses were speeding, using cell phones and running red lights.
The crack-down on unsafe drivers and pedestrians, is important because traffic fatalities throughout the valley are climbing. According to Metro, there have been 66 fatalities on county roadways so far this year. That's a more than 70 percent increase over the same time last year.
Another striking statistic, 16 pedestrians have been killed on county roadways so far this year. Metro says that's a 220 percent increase over the same time last year.
The extra patrols are made possible through a state-funded safety grant.
On Wednesday, law enforcement will target the North Las Vegas intersection of Lamb Boulevard and Charleston. On Thursday, they'll move patrols to Mesquite. On Friday, they'll be back in North Las Vegas focusing on Losee Road, specifically where it crosses Cheyenne and Craig. Then, on Saturday and Sunday they'll target the intersection of Tropicana and Paradise.
