Murder suspect accused of prior attacks on pregnant teen girlfriend
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Police say 22-year-old Bryan Devonte Clay is someone we'll be hearing a lot about in the days to come. Clay is behind bars charged in the horrific murders of a mother and daughter.
But those murders aren't the only violent crimes he's accused of that night. Police reports and court records reveal insight on who Clay is, and how police tracked him down.
The crimes Clay is charged with are the kind everyone is afraid of: horribly violent and totally random. An entire family targeted for no apparent reason, and a suspect high on drugs and alcohol- whose warning signs began months earlier.
"We believe this was a stranger," Metro Police Lt. Ray Steiber said. "A random savage act."
Clay is charged with raping and killing both 38-year-old Ignacia Martinez and her 10-year-old Karla. He's also charged with trying to kill Karla's father, Arturo, whose skull fractures have left him in a coma at University Medical Center.
We've since learned they weren't the only people police say Clay victimized that day. Clay's DNA was found on Ignacia and Karla Martinez, as well as another, unrelated woman.
"A 50-year-old woman who was attacked brutally attacked and she was sexually assaulted," Lt. Steiber said.
That's how police began tracking Clay down. The The 50-year-old had called 911 on April 15 before she was attacked to report that a black male adult was following her. Clay is charged with trying to kill the woman by punching her in the head and choking her. He's also charged with sexually assaulting her. She hit him in the head with a rock she picked up. Police found her in a desert lot near Tonopah and Vegas Drive.
"We are confident that we have solved both of those crimes," Lt. Steiber said.
Action News has learned Clay allegedly victimized someone else in the two months before. A criminal complaint for felony child abuse and neglect charges Clay with a Valentine's Day attack on his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend. He's charged with hitting her in the face and head and dragging her.
A second criminal complaint from March 15 involved the same girl. She told police Clay attacked her after she said she was breaking up with her. In that case, clay is charged with robbing her of her purse, grabbing her by the neck and chocking her, pulling her hair, punching and kicking her and slamming her face into the ground.
Clay told police that on the night of the murders he drank dark liquor, took ecstasy and smoked a PCP-laced cigarette.
