Appeals filed over Las Vegas water permits
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Southern Nevada Water Authority's plan to pump billions of gallons of water from rural areas along the Nevada-Utah line is back in court.
Environmentalists, local governments, Indian tribes, ranchers and others filed court challenges by Monday's deadline to last month's ruling by Nevada's state engineer that granted the water authority permission to pump up to 84,000 acre-feet of water a year from four valleys.
That water would be sent to Las Vegas through a 300-mile and pipeline that has yet to be built.
Great Basin Water Network argues that the state engineer's ruling will draw down eastern Nevada's groundwater system and result in serious environmental and economic harm.
An acre-foot is the amount of water it takes to cover an acre of land with water 1 foot deep.
