Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County coroner's office has identified the woman that was shot by Las Vegas police early Saturday morning as 49-year-old Sharmel T. Edwards of Las Vegas.

Edwards was shot near Jones Boulevard and Smoke Ranch Road at about 1:45 a.m. April 21.

According to police, a man called police to report that a woman he knew had stolen his car and that his gun was inside.

Police tracked the car to a parking lot. Negotiators attempted for two hours to persuade Edwards to surrender peacefully.

When the woman finally exited the vehicle, she pointed a gun at the police officers. Five police offers then opened fire on Edwards.

Those five officers have been placed on leave as required by department policy. Their names should be released today.
