Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County School District is working to make school zones safer for kids.

That's why they staged a walk audit today at Scherkenbach Elementary.

School and city officials met with Metro police while students were being dropped off Friday morning to look at parking and speed issues.

They also took notes on the locations of crosswalks and crossing guards to identify potential problems and ways to make the area safer.

"This opportunity is wonderful, because we're walking together," Principal Kim Hammond said. "They take pictures to document what we're discussing.  And they have the ability to bring in the people who can actually make the changes happen."

The Safe Routes to School program received a grant from the health district to hold walk audits at 50 schools around the district.
