Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Red Cross says it's not surprising to see so many house and apartment fires in the Valley. The numbers usually peak in the winter months because of space heaters.
"We've already helped 150 people in the last seven weeks," Lloyd Ziel with the Red Cross told Action News. "We've already had to take people off the streets and put them in hotels and feed them."
Volunteers offer displaced families immediate help with food and shelter, but they also work with them on long-term recovery plans.
The Red Cross relies on fundraising to prepare to offer their services. The Southern Nevada chapter estimates they'll spend at least $250,000 helping local families recover from fire disasters.
"The Red Cross is known for the bigger, more devastating events because they're news," Ziel said. "What people don't realize is the most money the Red Cross spends nationally is in response to house fires."
They're hoping the community will continue to support them financially, so they can continue to help those in need.
The Red Cross has teamed up with the Firefighter's Burn Foundation on a fundraiser this weekend. They'll be holding a Bowl-A-Thon at the Orleans. For more information, click here.
