No charges for parents in 2 Las Vegas child suicides
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Prosecutors say they won't press charges on the parents of two Clark County children who used unsecured guns to fatally shoot themselves in December.
The unrelated shootings that happened 10 hours apart on Dec. 13 involved a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. In both cases, at least one parent was home at the time.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Alexandra Chrysanthis said it's difficult for prosecutors to second guess what parents should have done to prevent the shootings, especially if they had no indication their child was contemplating suicide.
At least one Las Vegas parent has been prosecuted in the suicide of a child who used an unsecured weapon. That case was reported in 2005.
