Obama jobs bill hits home for Southern Nevadans
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Obama's jobs plan took center stage this morning at the Laborer's International Union of North America. It's being held at the Paris Convention Center in Las Vegas.
The need for jobs is top of the list in Washington, and Nevada is faced with the highest unemployment rate in the country. So it's fitting that U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis would be here, talking about ways to make jobs happen.
Her solution? The American Jobs Act.
"We can put your union brothers and sisters back to work right now by giving loans to companies that want to repair our roads, bridges, our airports, seaports, our railways, and refineries, said Solis.
"And you know what, these are all good ideas. But for good ideas to become law we need to hear your voices, "she urged to LIUNA members.
Solis calls the construction industry a key engine of the country's economy. She says investments in infrastructure are the only way those people will get back to work.
The new legislation is calling for $50 billion in road, rail and airport investments. As well as $35 billion to modernize and renovate schools.
Republicans are skeptical, calling it another stimulus bill.
"It's too late President Obama. The country has needed a real jobs plan for the last two and a half years," said Nevada GOP Chairwoman Amy Tarkanian.
"Throughout the country hard working Nevadans know that the failed policies of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will not create jobs or prosperity," she said.
Obama sent the bill to congress today and is pushing for a swift pass. Republican leaders have said they're willing to work with the president on this one.
