New billboards cause a stir in North Las Vegas
North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - There's a billboard controversy brewing in North Las Vegas. The Police Officers Association put up several with messages meant to remind the public of the city council's recent decision to lay off officers.
With a big read warning sign, one billboard says, "Due to recent police lay offs we can no longer guarantee your safety".
While another shows a man in a mask holding a gun. It says there's less police and no consequences thanks to your city council.
"We're trying to educate the public and tell them you're going to see an increase in response times, less public services to you because we don't have the manpower to cover that stuff," Chris Cannon with North Las Vegas Police Officers Association says.
The council is forced to balance a budget with a 30 million dollar hole. One council member told us if the police officers would take a pay cut, the lay offs wouldn't happen.
"My concern is I have a union out of control, that is here saying we would rather play a role in elections, we would rather threaten our city council with recall, which they have as opposed to sitting down and negotiating and actually giving something up," Councilwoman, Anita Wood, says.
The Police Officers Association has filed an injunction to stop the lay offs as a well as a lawsuit against the city. Both are still pending.
