A Las Vegas woman's green thumb caught the attention of a talk show airing here on Channel 13.

Vegas Roots Community Garden is the city's first and only urban farm. Director Rosalind Brooks believes in the connection between fresh food and health. She told 13 Action News she is excited to be able to share that message on a national platform.

"Behind these walls, behind these fences, you would never think that this is here," Brooks said.

When she started the community garden in 2010 all she had was a dirt lot on Tonopah Drive and a desire to get closer to nature.

"Who knew we could grow this kind of food in the middle of the desert?" she asked. "In the middle of the city, amongst concrete and bright lights and all of that?"

Now it has grown into something she never imagined when she started -- a real understanding of the connection between growing your own food and health. Brooks said she will share what she's learned with a nationwide audience Wednesday on ABC's "The Chew," a lifestyle show geared to foodies.

"Growing a garden also grows your health," she said. "It is that kale that could help with blood pressure or its the tomato that will help with this and that."

"The Chew" airs on KTNV weekdays at noon. For more information on Vegas Roots Community Garden, visit its website.
