Henderson police are investigating shots fired at a parked, unoccupied police car.
On the night of July 4, multiple gunshots were fired at a Henderson Police Department car parked at the Henderson Animal Care and Control Facility located at 300 E. Galleria Drive. Police say the total number of visible bullet holes is six.
The vehicle received damage from the gunfire, but no animal control officers or police personnel were injured. The vehicle had been parked at the facility during the complex’s refurbishment.
The damage was discovered the morning of July 5 and the shooting remains under investigation.
“In today’s climate, we take these incidents seriously as officer safety is of utmost importance,” said Chief Patrick E. Moers. “We ask our community members to continue to work with us and to be our eyes and ears on the street. If you see something, say something.”
With the timing of everything else going on in the country, our 13 Action News crew asked Capt. Eric Denison if he believes the gunman intended to harm officers.
"There has been nothing that would indicate that it is anything tied to anything else that is going on except an act of the Fourth of July when they had the noise that could cover the shots and they took advantage of that," said Denison.
The department considers this an act of vandalism, which is why they say they waited a week to inform the community that this happened. They didn't see the incident as an urgent threat.
"Unless there were other indicators that they were trying to threaten police, than it would be more than just the vandalism of the car," said Denison.
