Energy drink linked to deaths, hospitalizations
(KTNV) -- You see them on the counters of gas stations and drug stores, ready to be scooped up for a burst of extra energy.
But now, the popular product is coming under fire.
The Federal Drug Administration says that 13 deaths and 33 hospitalizations linked to 5 Hour Energy has been reported to them.
The chief executive officer of the company is stepping up to the plate to defend his company's product.
He says that at a certain point, it is the fault of the consumer, not the product.
A two-ounce bottle of 5 Hour Energy has about as much caffeine as two eight ounce cups of coffee. That is nowhere near a lethal dose, which would be closer to 25 shots of 5 Hour Energy.
