A quick-thinking good Samaritan came to the rescue during a house fire in Henderson, which left four people without a home Monday.
“I live a couple of blocks away and saw black smoke,” said Tracey Bushman. “I knew it was in the neighborhood, so I thought I would drive through.”
Before firefighters from Henderson Fire Rescue could get to the house on on Box Elder Way, Tracey sped to the scene and jumped into action.
“I just got out of my car I know I needed to call the fire department and get help and just make sure everyone was out of the house.”
Tracey says one woman was already outside the home as flames started to spread, but the woman’s husband was still inside.
"We were trying to get close enough to be able to talk to him and see him without also endangering ourselves,” says Tracey.”We didn’t know if the house was going to explode or what might happen."
Tracey says the husband was still inside trying to put the fire out with a hose.
"It was very smoky by the front door and he wasn't answering us so we honestly didn't know if he was okay."
The man was rushed to UMC with burn injuries and is expected to be okay, according to Henderson Fire Rescue.
Firefighters were also able to rescue and give oxygen to two cats that were trapped inside.
But Tracey doesn't’t consider herself a hero, she says she was just in the right place at the right time to lend a helping hand.
“I didn't really think about I just hoped in the action and did what I thought needed to be done.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
