ORIGINAL STORY

A 5-year-old girl was transported to the hospital after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver near Gentle Rain Way and Waterview Drive, which is near Lake North Drive and South Fort Apache Road.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. The child was transported to a local hospital with a substantial leg injury.

Las Vegas police say that the girl was walking with a 14-year-old boy when the incident happened. The hit-and-run driver reportedly slowed down, said "I'm sorry" and then drove away.

Police have confirmed that this is the first hit and run to happen in their jurisdiction since the new law went into effect on Oct. 1 that increases the penalty for people who leave the scene of a crash.
