At 1:04 a.m. emergency services received multiple calls of a fire on an apartment balcony at 895 Sierra Vista Drive.

The fire was at The Villas at Desert Pointe apartments near Desert Inn Road and Cambridge and it highlights a dangerous living situation on the east side.

The fire started in a storage closet on the balcony, spread into Apartment 304 but did not go into other apartments. The fire alarms in the apartment did not work, according to firefighters.

Those on the scene believe the fire was likely started by squatters considering it occurred in a vacant apartment. Five people in apartments 204 and 104 have been displaced due to water damage but thankfully no injuries have been reported.

Westland Real Estate Group released a statement regarding the fire at The Villas at Desert Pointe.

"Last night there was a fire at Villas at Desert Pointe. As soon as we were made aware of the situation we began to take action to ensure that our residents were being taken care of. The safety of our tenants is our top priority and we are working in full cooperation with the Las Vegas Fire Department to ensure their safety.  The result of the fire has been the need to relocate several residents.  We are covering the costs of the relocation and are working with our residents to make their transition to replacement apartments as smooth as possible. There will be no further comment made at this time."
