A Las Vegas family's dog is recovering Sunday night after being caught in an animal trap at Red Rock Canyon.

A man and a woman were hiking with their dog at Little Red Rock when all of a sudden, their dog stepped right into an animal trap that was tucked away in a bush.

Brandon Kennedy was with some friends and their dogs when they heard a dog screaming.

"Started hearing a dog in distress almost like a dog fight or something like that," said Kennedy. "Screaming like bloody murder. Me and my buddy Travis looked at each other like let's go."

Kennedy and his friends made their way towards the horrific scene.

The dog's owner was able to get the dog out of the trap. Both were covered in blood.

"Dripping blood out of its mouth cause as he was caught in the trap, he started biting the trap of course to try and get it off him and of course it being heavy metal, he apparently broke a bunch of his teeth."

The dog's owner rushed him to the animal hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

He will be ok but Kennedy wants hikers to know this could happen to you.

This trap was placed just off the path. According to Nevada law, traps are legal but you must be considerate of populated areas when placing them. Also, the traps must be tagged with the owner's name and number and the trap must be 30 feet away from any bait. Kennedy said neither of those three things were done.

"If there's one there might be more," said Kennedy. "I don't want to accidentally step in one of those things."
