Today is a big day across the United States and here in the Valley as we celebrate our nation’s independence. Throughout our country, families and friends will gather for fun and fireworks.

Here in the Valley, we have an abundance of free fireworks displays. Public fireworks events are best way to safely enjoy the holiday. But if you want to enjoy your own private fireworks show, there are important things that you need know.

The only legal fireworks that you can buy here are “Safe-N-Sane” products. There are 150 Valley locations where you can purchase them. The fireworks are for sale from June 28 through July 4.

The penalty for buying illegal fireworks can result in up to 6 months in jail. So keep that in mind if you get the itch to fire up a roman candle from the street in front of your house.

On the side of safety, please remember that while these fireworks are called “Safe-N-Sane,” they can still cause fires. So please be careful and ALWAYS supervise your children around any kind of fireworks.

On a closing note, experts say that most firework-related injuries occur when people try to re-ignite a “dud,” or fireworks that don’t engage.

Have a safe and happy 4th…. Mike

What a special treat to have one of my favorite comedians of all time stop by the studio. MARTIN SHORT!!!

He was in town promoting his comedy weekend show at the Mirage. Not only is he currently the voice in one of the biggest animated movies in theaters right now -- "Madagascar 3" -- but he's the star of so many of my favorite classics. Of course I'm talking about my personal favorites, "Father of the Bride" & "The Three Amigos." I think "Franc" the wedding planner from "Father of the Bride" might be my ultimate favorite. I dared ask Martin to bring that character back to life on the set for me.

But honestly... the highlight was being able to reenact the Three Amigos salute! I grew up watching that movie with my Dad and my Godfather.

Martin was so gracious and an all around class act. His wife passed away a few years ago and he is very close with his three adult children. He said after his weekend gig in Vegas he was headed to his summer home for a long break from the hectic Hollywood lifestyle. He was a pleasure to talk to and so funny in real life.

Happy birthday America! Humans delight in 4th of July celebrations every year but our furry friends definitely do not.

The animal shelters are filled with runaways every 5th of July because dogs, cats and other animals sometimes bolt when the the booms and bangs of fireworks start.  This a a reminder for the hundreds of thousands of pet owners in the Valley: Please take care of your four-legged loved ones before you shoot off your Safe 'n Sane fireworks.

Doctor Debbie White from Lone Mountain Animal Hospital was on Action News Midday this week to tell everyone how to care for our animals.  Please take time to watch the interview and help us make Las Vegas a better place to live for people and pets alike.
