This past weekend while attending a birthday party for a friend of my 6-year-old daughter, I made an observation which perhaps you may have noticed as well. As a society, we are addicted to cell phones and social networking!
Ok, I know, stunning right? While that thought is clearly a run-of-the-mill notion by nearly everyone whose fingers can text, it is as I see it, a problem.
Let’s forget the dangers of talking and texting while driving a car or even walking for that matter and focus on something even more important, your children.
Birthdays are times for people to get together as a child celebrates another year of life and other kids revel in games, cake and gifts. Ultimately what this provides is a lasting memory and an opportunity for people to meet one another in a relaxed familial setting.
What I witnessed though were a number of folks texting away on their phones, an occasional picture being taken, and an overall disjointed feel to what should have been a great celebration.
Don’t get me wrong, modern technology is wonderful. But just like everything, it’s best used in moderation. I am not here to criticize or chastise, merely to point out that sometimes the best things in life are the simple ones. Ones, that don’t require a charged battery, a keyboard or the use of Siri.
Have a great week,
Mike

LISA REMILLARD
"Whoa!" You loved him on the 90s TV show "Blossom" and of course Season 3 of "Dancing with the Stars." Now Las Vegas...prepare yourself for Joey Lawrence in Chippendales!Of course he's been known for his hot body for years. But now ladies, he's prepared to show it off here at the Rio for a limited time. Joey stopped by Midday last week to talk about what it takes to be a part of such an iconic show.
Joey finished third in the "Dancing With the Stars" competition in 2006 and seeing as how the "Dancing with the Stars" is now looking for an All-Star cast for the next season, Joey told me he would TOTALLY be on board to put on his dancing shoes again! All you have to do is vote for him on ABC.com. He's such a nice guy, so funny and excited to be here in Vegas. Oh yeah...and I got him to say "whoa" on TV again. Great sport!

A home boy can come home to roost.
Jo Koy, a very popular comedian, actually lived and started his career here in Las Vegas. He's a very funny guy and he stopped by Action News Midday to talk about life, his family, the world in general, and what it was like to get his start in his hometown.
Jo is quite the character and it was almost impossible to keep up with him. He headlines on the Strip several times a year and it's definitely worth checking him out.
