This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking my daughter to the International Sportsmens Expo at the Las Vegas Convention center. The event was well-attended and there was a ton to do and see, but what I was most impressed with was the things our state did for kids.
There was a trout pond where kids could fish for Rainbow Trout, a draw your own T-shirt and coloring book area and even a spot for kids to learn to tie and make their own flies for fishing. All of the above were free and a truly great act of friendship from Nevada.
The people from the state conservation department were incredibly kind and helpful and both children and adults could learn quite a bit about conservation, wildlife and things of concern like invasive species.
My daughter’s favorite thing to do was the T-shirt coloring area, but her favorite thing to watch was the dock jumping event for dogs. The event, if you are not familiar with it, is where the handler holds a decoy and throws it out over a pool. The dog follows the decoy out, retrieves it and brings it to the owner at the dock. There are a number of different kinds of Dock Jumping but the one we greatly enjoyed was the longest jump. We saw an incredibly gifted dog jump nearly out of the pool at 27 feet 11 inches.
So if you get a chance next year, take your kids to the International Sportsmens Expo, trust me you’ll be glad you did!

FASHIONISTAS & FASHION DESIGNERS this is for you!
Las Vegas is known for it's nightlife, restaurants & entertainment. But when it comes to fashion, our city is never included with the elite. But that could change very soon. The Las Vegas Fashion Design Council wants to make Vegas a fashion hub like New York and Los Angeles. We have great talent here. But unfortunately, there's a stigma attached to our city in the fashion world. Often times, our great designers move out of state and claim another city as their home base to give themselves more credibility and a better chance at success. LVFDC wants to change that!
The council wants to nurture our local talent and keep them HERE! The group -- including some local professional designers-- stopped by Midday to ask local designers to join in their cause. LVFDC is now open and offering classes on how to grow the business side of a fashion brand and how to develop a designer's talent.
The next LVFDC event is February 24 where the council will introduce 11 prominent LOCAL labels and their 2012 collections. Way to go! Let's make Las Vegas a fashion hub!

It's great to go back to your roots and it can be fun and educational for all. Growing up in Wyoming, I was blessed to learn about the great outdoors at an early age and how to respect wildlife and the land that sustains it. The spirit of mother nature came to Las Vegas and Action News Midday last week. The International Sportsmen's Exposition was held last week at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Seven-time world champion elk caller Corey Jacobsen was our guest on Midday to tell us all about it. It was great to know family-friendly shows like that are open to the public around here and it was great fun to watch the faces of the entire newsroom when he let the bugle bellow with the mating call of the elk.
