A jury has reached a verdict in the punishment for Gladys Perez and Marc Colon in the murder trial for three-year-old Crystal Figueroa.
Colon and Crystal's mother, Gladys Perez, were convicted earlier this week of killing the toddler and leaving her body in a dumpster in January 2006.
Colon will spend the rest of his life in prison, without the possibility of parole.
Perez will spend the rest of her life in prison, but has the possibility of parole.
"Marc end(ed) up in a big brawl according to the report, and there's a lot of first fighting and punches being thrown and things like that," said Metro Detective James Vaccaro of an earlier domestic violence charge against Colon.
But Marc Anthony Colon's family testified by video tape and painted a different picture.
They said Marc Anthony was a dedicated family man whose own father was abusive.
"Anthony's dad, from the beating and the fighting... I left him when Anthony was two," Colon's mother said.
Colon's two daughters also testified on tape, calling him a loving and
special dad.Gladys Perez's family also took the stand, pleading for leniency in her sentence.
"I know that she did mistakes," said her sister Geraldine. "But overall she's a good person and I just hope that one day we could be together again."
