Another master planned community will soon be built in Henderson but this time the project will begin with a massive environmental cleanup of 2,200 acres of land.
Action News anchor Tiffani Sargent has the details behind the project.
The Landwell Restoration project will take place near Lake Mead and Boulder Highway where industrial waste was dumped for several decades.
The area was previously a basic magnesium plant that once played a vital role in World War II.
The plant at one time employed 13,000 people.
Over the years, industrial activity on 440 acres of the 2,200 acre site left contamination behind.
Still, over the last 18 years Basic Remediation Company has voluntarily spent $60 million of its own money for testing and research and vows to clean up the site so families can eventually call it home.
"After the state clears the property for development, we will come back in at our own expense and test every home site," explained President of Basic Remediation Mark Paris.
Knowing that the land will no longer be a threat to future generations gives those living in Henderson peace of mind.
"The main thing that is exciting to me is to know that there will be homes, schools and businesses out here," said Selma Bartlett who lives in Henderson.
Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson says hopefully future businesses and residents will learn from the company how to respect the environment.
"We have seen the ups and the downs of industry here, but I will say it again, I think it is so important that this company has stayed the course," said Mayor Gibson.
With the supervision of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection the clean up is expected to last about two or three years.
The land will be released in phases for development.
