Strangers step up to help families who lost everything in apartment fire

Updated:

Las Vegas, NV - Thanks to the generosity of strangers, several families devastated by an apartment fire are getting the help they need.  After seeing the families on our newscast, viewers wanted to help. They took it upon themselves to rebuild lives.

"I just put myself in their shoes, if that was me and my son in a fire, I would want to receive the same kind of help, that's all I'm doing," says Cynthia Lucera, who took the call for action

Abraham Camejo followed suit. "It's priceless," he says. "The importance of helping out somebody in need is something I grew up learning."

Cynthia donated almost everything she owns, and Abraham offered to move it all for free - so that four families devastated by fire can have a new beginning.

"It's been hard," says Hilda Vega. "Really, really hard." She and her children lost everything they own in the fire. It erupted on July 20th at the Toscano Village Apartments, near Tropicana and Eastern.

"I was watching TV, and I heard an explosion outside," describes her 11-year-old son, Jonathon. "I looked outside and saw fire."

But now, that initial fear and devastation, is being overshadowed by a new sense of hope. "It makes me feel like people care, even if you don't know them," he says.

All thanks to these helping hands. "It's the best feeling in the world to give, and I think we all want to make change," Lucero says. "It starts within our own communities."

"Our community is a great community," Camejo adds. "We actually help out each other when in need, and if I can do my part to make someone's day better, then that's what I want to do."

Luckily no one was injured in that fire. The cause is still under investigation.  If you'd like to further help the families, you can call the apartment complex at 702-458-6818.
