Security shutters prevented woman from escaping fire in North Las Vegas

Updated:

North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Metal security shutters may have played a role in a deadly fire in North Las Vegas.

An elderly woman and her cat were found in a home on Redfield Avenue near Alexander and Allen on Wednesday.  The North Las Vegas fire department got the call at about 4:30 am, but estimate the flames had been burning for hours before that.

The metal shutters on the doors and windows had to be operated by hand.  The woman was elderly and in a wheelchair. North Las Vegas Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Brame says she fell victim to the very system she installed to keep her safe.

"It basically creates an oven. That's essentially what we're talking about happened here, is the home, there's no place for the smoke to escape. There's no place for the heat to escape."

Brame says metal shutters should only be part of an overall security system that includes other monitors. The home had several smoke detectors.  Brame says they melted.
