Big sports weekend brings out of town fans ready to spend

Updated:

For those who like baseball, they got a chance to see some Major League teams play, and if that's not your sport there was also a little basketball going on with the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

And sold out tickets and record breaking numbers show that Vegas is a sports town.

Whether you're a fan of the field or of the court Vegas had both this weekend.

"The atmosphere, the people are going crazy. The balls are flying everywhere and we were trying to catch them," exclaims Cubs fan Katie Godla.

"It's not everyday that we get an event like this out here, so when we do, we're coming out to see it," says Laurence Kubica, another Cubs fan.

An idea more than 11,500 people had as the Chicago Cubs and White Sox had a little spring training at Cashman Field.

Over at the Thomas & Mack Center, thousands piled into seats to cheer for the Rebels or Aztecs in the Mountain West Conference Championship; breaking a record of more than 71,000 people attending the entire weekend.

"I thought we played really well. They were just a little bit more athletic and they finished down the stretch and we had turnovers and it cost us the game," says disappointed UNLV fan Bob Stegall.

So while the Aztecs celebrate on the court, those wearing red prepare to go home.

"I'm going to go home and mope for a little while," says Stegall.

While many UNLV fans are at home moping tonight San Diego fans are celebrating on the Strip spending their well earned money in our local economy.

"We're going out to dinner and then we're going to hit the casinos," says McKenzie Williams.

And Williams may run into a number of fans who came all the way from Chicago to support their team and our local businesses.

"I'm a big Cubs fan. I'm in town to see the game and enjoy the city," says a fan.

And the Cubs did win today's game against the White Sox.

We'll have more out of town fans coming in later this month on the 31st as the L. A. Dodgers take on the Cincinnati Reds at Cashman Field.
