Pilot killed in crash in Boulder City after plane runs out of fuel

Updated:

Boulder City, NV (KTNV) - A pilot is killed after his plane apparently runs out of fuel. It crashed within sight of the runway he was desperately trying to reach.

It happened around 4:30pm Friday, only a few hundred yards from the Boulder City Airport.

"It's weird. I mean, who does this happen to," asked Donna Curry.

She witnessed a small four seater Beechcraft BE35 Bonanza crash as she walked her dogs.

"I heard what sounded like a piece of aluminum siding hit an electrical wire," she recalls.

It's a sight she will never forget.

"All I saw was parts of the plane breaking apart. The plane had hit the lightning wires. The nose hit the three transformer wires beneath it, nose dived down, bounced across the road and just stopped," says Curry.

Curry called 911 where she heard the pilot had radioed in minutes before to Boulder City Airport that he had run out of fuel.

Running to the plane about a hundred yards in front of her she saw the pilot; the only one in the vehicle.

"I said, Hey, hey, and nobody said anything. He didn't move. He just laid back in his seat with his eyes open," she said.

Federal records show the plane is registered to Brett Beuckens although it's not known if he is the pilot. The FAA says the aircraft left Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix and was on the way to Henderson.

For Curry, this experience has her shaken up.

"What a weird feeling to be out in the dessert like that and nobody around and your right there by a plane crash," said Curry.

Boulder City officials say they have now handed over the crash site to the FAA where they are investigating and trying to find out what made that plane come crashing down.
