NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV- Residents who live just doors away from Metro Officer Trevor Nettleton, who was shot dead in the garage of his home, believe anyone of them could have been the target, since police say this all points to a random robbery attempt.
"You hear about it all the time. But it doesn't bother you till it hits home," said Walter Williams who knew the slain officer. "He was very nice, but we had no idea he was a cop," he added.
Neighbors are quite shaken and practically living in fear, because according to detectives, the burglars were just looking for the right moment to strike.
"My husband is always in the garage and they could have gone up to him," said Nikki Booth.
Some residents feel that the high foreclosure rate has played a role in home invasion robberies and point out that this isn't the first incident that happens in the neighborhood.
"There's another house that had a home invasion two years ago. It's a scary situation. It's bad," said Ursulla Williams.
According to the crime view map on the City of North Las Vegas web site, during the last 90 days there have been 22 burglaries with in a mile radius from where the deadly assault happened. With empty homes around the block, neighbors now say leaving any doors open can pose a higher risk than they could have even imagined.
