The state Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation says about 8,000 Nevadans may qualify for extended jobless benefits under a bill signed by President Obama.
The law signed Friday provides another 14 weeks of benefits to all out-of-work people who have exhausted their benefits or will do so by the end of the year. Those in states like Nevada where the jobless rate is 8.5 percent or above get an additional six weeks.
Nevada's unemployment rate hit a record 13.3 percent in September.
State officials says claimants in Nevada who have exhausted all benefits will be mailed a notice explaining how to apply for the extended benefit.
