Drivers at a Henderson school are breaking the law, potentially putting young elementary children in harm's way every day. A number of concerned parents are furious over the issue, especially since "no u-turn" signs have recently been posted in the school zone at Fay Galloway Elementary in Henderson.
After viewers wrote to Action News, we staked out to see for ourselves. Less than ten minutes outside of Fay Galloway during pickup, and our cameras caught one illegal u-turn after the next.
Action News Reporter Drew Karedes went after those visibly breaking the rules, asking why these drivers were disregarding the law and the safety of children.
Henderson Police say there's no way to crack down on this 100 percent. However, Henderson Police spokesman Keith Paul says the drivers who are busted making these illegal turns will be slapped with a citation of $167.
"It's too dangerous. I care about my kid too much, and it's way too dangerous, even for myself to come and pick her up," said concerned parent Jeremy Ruh.
Ruh initially asked us to investigate months ago, hoping it would solve the problem. He says nothing's changed, and he's fed up. He has since pulled his daughter from that school.
"It's going to take someone to get ran over. Either a crossing guard, or a child or parent for something to happen," added Ruh.
We wanted to know why so many drivers are potentially endangering children for their own convenience. Turns out, many drivers banging these illegal "u-ie's" have children enrolled at Fay Galloway themselves.
"I would love for there to be a different solution. I don't know what else there is though," said Eden, who says limited parking forces her to break the rules.
Other drivers said they only make illegal u-turns when they don't see children in their vicinity.
"Yeah, I mean i'm watching as i'm doing it," said Stacey.
Henderson Police say whether these drivers know it or not, these drivers are risking an accident involving a child.
"The only thing more that is going to be is we're going to continue enforcement. There will be more enforcement around that school. There will be more enforcement around every other school," said Keith Paul, Henderson Police Spokesman.
By simply driving down the street to make a legal turn, police say these drivers could make the streets by Fay Galloway a much safer place. We contacted Henderson Municipal Court to find out how many illegal u-turn citations have been issued at Fay Galloway since the 'no u-turn' signs went up.
A spokesperson says the court does not have the proper software to tally up citations.
