Arizona firefighters heading to help California crews

Updated:

Members of the Yuma Fire Department are in southern California helping battle a nasty, wind-driven wildfire in San Bernadino County.

Yuma fire said it received a mutual aid request from the Imperial Valley Strike Team Sunday.

An engine and four personnel left Yuma to meet with other Strike Team members in Calipatria, Calif., before heading to the fire scene.

The fire had destroyed three homes in remote canyons but firefighters had kept it from encroaching into the town of Wrightwood, about 75 miles east of Los Angeles. Between 4,000 to 6,000 residents were ordered to evacuate and at least 200 homes remained threatened.

The fire had burned at least 7,500 acres, or nearly 12 square miles, by Monday morning and was 20 percent contained.
