Attempted sexual assault at Red Rock Overlook

Posted:

Metro Police are on the lookout for a man who they believe attempted to sexually assault a woman at the scenic Red Rock Canyon overlook.

Action News Anchor, Tiffani Sargent went out to the area, just off State Route 159 just west of the visitors center to get some reaction from locals and visitors. Luis Rivera says this is his first time to Red Rock Canyon and he thinks it's absolutely "breath-taking".

However, when Action News told him about the attempted sexual assault, he wasn't surprised.

He said, "That's because crimes can happen just about anywhere."

Metro is issuing a sketch of a man, believed to be 35 years old, Hispanic, 6'0 tall, 220lbs. with short dark curly hair, a black mustache and brown eyes.

Metro believes the attempted sexual assault took place on July 7th around 8:30 PM which is why visitors like Sharon Nealius and her family say they always make sure to stick together.

Sharon tells Action News, "Oh yes, definitely. I wouldn't want to be here after dark."

Still, locals like Heather Fisher with the organization called Save Red Rock continues to push for more security within the canyon.

Heather Fisher tells Tiffani,"We're pushing for entrance gates just like they have at Lake Mead, we figure that it would be an extra layer of accountability and things like this, wouldn't  happen if people had a check point they had to go through."

However, until something like that is put into place, many say good old-fashioned common sense is always the best defense, not to mention spreading the word about potential predators.

The Red Rock Overlook is open to the public during the summer, from 6 am to 9 PM.

If you know anything more about this case, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Or call Metro's Sexual Assault Unit directly at 702-828-3421.
