President Obama arrived in Las Vegas Tuesday afternoon to attend a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at Caesars Palace. Air Force One landed just after 4pm at McCarran International. President Obama spoke at the fundraiser around 8:30pm.
The mayor of Las Vegas is sounding off about President Obama's desire to agree to meet with Governor Gibbons about tourism comments he made three months ago. It was during a town hall meeting in Indiana that President Obama touched on the federal bailouts given to corporations.
"You are not going to be able to give out those big bonuses until you pay taxpayers back. You can't get corporate jets. You can't take trips to Las Vegas or go to the Superbowl on taxpayers' dime," said President Obama.
Mayor Goodman sent President Obama a letter recently, telling him those comments were harmful in feeding unjustified stereotypes about Las Vegas.
"The message really was one that hurt us because people just got the impression that the most important man in the world said don't come to Las Vegas," said Mayor Goodman.
Monday, Mayor Goodman got a call from President Obama's Chief of Staff. He told him that when the President comes to Las Vegas, he wants to compliment the city as a place to do business.
"That was very important to me and I look forward to greeting him on that basis," said Mayor Goodman.
Mayor Goodman says Las Vegas usually hosts about 22,000 business meetings a year. With that comes about 6 million visitors, who pump around $8.5 billion dollars into the local economy.
