Native American Visiting Artist

  • Print

Shirley Nelson will be visiting us from Tuba City, Arizona, the heart of the Dine (Navajo) Nation. Shirley learned her craft at a very young age, and is now a gifted artist who is passing the tradition of fine bead work, and the craft of Heishi and Cedar Berry necklaces and bracelets, down to her own grandchildren. She will appear with her daughter-in-law, Charmayne Nelson, who specializes in beaded bracelets. Both ladies will demonstrate how they make the beaded jewelry and Shirley will demonstrate how dream catchers are made with a small loom and hide. She will also give her audience a rudimentary Navajo Language lesson, including the words for Hello, Goodbye and Thank you. Shirley and Charmayne will both appear in traditional clothing. Crafts for younger children will be offered also.
