Description:

DATES: July 26 through Sept. 20, 2013 HOURS: 8 a.m. – 10:30 p.m., Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday The College of Southern Nevada presents a solo exhibit by local artist and CSN part-time instructor, Michael Ogilvie. Nevada native Ogilvie received his BA in art from the University of Nevada, Reno and his MFA in painting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has exhibited his art in the adult sections of comic book stores nationally and internationally, has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers, and has self-published four comic books. The fifth - Chum - is in production and to be released late 2014. Regarding his artwork, Ogilvie states; “My art work is viciously cute visual poetry for the connoisseur of fanatical conjecture. If this seems partly trite then it is so – for the roots, history, and sheer ubiquity of the comic would not be so if it were not partly trite. This reason, among reasons, is why it still prevails today. Its power of enticement is its simplicity. Align this with the fact that comics have for years been a refuge for children and revisiting those images as an adult can link one to a memory or time of innocence, a time before love and joy were terminal. This reconnection, or rebirth of naivety, is generally intended to incite euphoria or comfort. I do not make it for catharsis but rather to explore the very nature of that innocence, and to twist preconceived notions of how the resulting sensations are configured. Often, the answer to such a resurrection of youthful awe is pleasure. I might lace my paintings with concepts of beauty, escape, affirmation, humiliation, embarrassment, isolation, elation, horror, and humor; I do this ultimately to propound the charm that ignites the senses: Pleasure. It is the only constant to remain inconsistent all one’s life. Constant in that one yearns for it with every breath, and inconsistent in that not every breath fulfills it. The essence of my work/my comics is to examine the moments of when this pleasure peaks, when it recedes, and how I can better understand the memory related to and the significance of, the disparity between.”
