Vegas PBS Partners with Andson to Promote Children's Literacy and Vocabulary Skills
Vegas PBS announced today that it has partnered with Andson Academics (a division of the Andson Foundation) to launch "Martha Speaks™ Reading Buddies Summer Program," a series of children's literacy camps. In this 5-week program, camp participants watch and discuss a Martha Speaks episode, read and discuss a related picture book, play a game or do an activity, while recording lessons in a journal. Martha Speaks is an animated series on PBS KIDS, based on the children's book series by Susan Meddaugh. Aimed at viewers between the ages of four and seven, Martha, a beloved family dog, uses her abilities to teach kids new words. Andson provides families with free educational resources to encourage learning and keep students engaged over the summer vacation. As part of Andson's ongoing partnerships with other afterschool programs, staff and volunteers deliver the Martha Speaks™ Reading Buddies Program at ten different locations across the Valley and serve approximately 500 children. Starting the week of June 17 until July 25, children will be taught 32 new words and read nine books. The camps are located within select Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada locations; St. Anne's Catholic School and YMCA in Las Vegas; and St. Jude's Ranch for Children in Boulder City, NV. For more information on session times, locations, or for volunteer opportunities, please contact the Andson Foundation at (702) 785-0020.
