(KTNV) -- You might want to check those credit card receipts carefully today.

New rules that just went into effect are allowing stores to charge you extra if you pay with plastic.

Credit card companies charge businesses every time a customer uses their credit card to pay for a purchase.

But now there is a new "checkout" fee.

Merchants decided to fight those fees and won. And now, they will be allowed to charge the customer the fee instead.

The fees could be up to four percent of the purchase.

Some retailers, such as WalMart, say they will not pass along the fee.

Stores that do plan to charge are required to post very visible signs in the store. Plus, it will be on the bottom of the receipt.

Online retailers are being required to post the notice on their homepages.
