Intelligent plastic food labels
Do you know how fresh the food is when you go grocery shopping? Labels on some food, like meat, provide a date on the package to determine freshness.
But the date is only an indication of the food's peak freshness, it doesn’t really let you know the exact level of freshness. Now a handful of companies have created what’s called “intelligent plastics.”
The plastic reads the amount of ammonia or other chemicals that are released as food spoils. The label then changes color as the food ages.
There's no word yet on what stores may begin using “intelligent plastic.”
