USDA testing
A new round of testing is being put in place to help cut down on recalls involving meat.
The new testing for raw beef and all ready-to-eat products containing meat and poultry goes into effect after the first of the year. The USDA will require producers to hold shipments until they pass agency testing.
The hope is this move will reduce consumer exposure to unsafe meat products. Officials estimate if this new requirement had been in place sooner, 49 different recalls could have been prevented between 2007 and 2010.
