Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Home warranties are supposed to ease your headaches, when something goes wrong. But that's not what happened for one Valley woman. And when she had difficulty getting any help from her home warranty company, she called Contact 13's Call for Action Volunteers.

"I was crying. I was rather upset," says Elaine Svasek.

She's laughing now. But earlier this month, she was far from happy.

"The air went out on, actually the 9th of November. It was that evening and I woke up and I was very cold," says Elaine.

She says she called her home warranty company right away. Unfortunately being a Friday night, she had to wait until Monday for someone to come out and fix the problem.

"They sent someone out and he said no, everything is fine. And I said well how come I don't have any heat," says Elaine.

She says she had to call her warranty company back and ask for someone else to be sent out. And she says that took several more calls.

"You can't get to speak to anybody. You can't get through to a supervisor, that's just not, it must not be allowed. There's no one ever available," says Elaine.

She says a second person was eventually sent out and he found the problem right away. But there was another issue. It was going to take the warranty company a couple more days to actually approve the repairs. Meanwhile, Elaine was trying to cope with still not having any heat.

"You couldn't shower, it was too cold. And I had the use of the gas log and I had a nice neighbor who loaned me a space heater," says Elaine.

She was sick and tired of being cold and decided to turn to our Call for Action volunteers. And she says, within minutes she got a call from the warranty company and was told the repairs were approved and someone would be out right away to fix it.

"I thought it was just wonderful. It was very nice to know that there is someone out there that will help," says Elaine.

So here's the Contact 13 bottom line. Make sure you understand your home warranty contract and what is and isn't covered. Also, keep notes when dealing with customer service and email the company if possible, that way there's a record of your conversations.

And if you feel like you're getting the runaround, we've got your back Las Vegas. Call one of our volunteers any weekday between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm at 702-368-2255.
