Black Friday wasn't the only thing starting early this year. You can already find Cyber Monday deals online.

The latest online retail performance data from "IBM Benchmark" shows total online sales for Thanksgiving are up more than 17%, compared to last year. A long list of retailers, including Wal-Mart, Amazon and Best Buy all unveiled pre-Black Friday deals even before Thanksgiving.

If you're going online, it's important to protect yourself. Now's the time of year when operators of fake or sketchy retail websites are hoping to lure you in with promises of great deals. Before you buy something, do some research on the company. The Better Business Bureau is a great place to start.

And don't use your debit card online, because if someone is able to hack in and steal your info, you don't want them cleaning out your bank account. Credit cards offer more consumer protections like fraud and ID theft and extended warranties you won't get from debit cards.

And when entering your information on any site, make sure your the website is secure and starts with HTTPS. That S shows that your connection to that site is Secure.
