Tech-support scam
The Federal Trade Commission has taken action to stop a recent rash of what it calls tech-support scams.
We've reported on this before. Scammers call, claiming to be with a company like Microsoft, McAfee or Norton and say they've detected a virus on your computer. Then for a small price, sometimes a fee as high as $450, the scammer then claims to remove the virus.
The FTC says it's imposed temporary restraining orders against 14 companies nationwide, effectively shutting the companies down. The FTC is warning everyone to beware of this sort of scam, which they claim has fleeced tens of millions of dollars from consumers.
